“I wanted to take a moment to highlight why I love being part of the Adopt a Vet program. Our veterans have given so much for our country, and this is just one small way we can give back. It brings me immense joy to help these heroes by taking care of their dental health, ensuring they have a healthy smile. After all they’ve done for us, it’s the least we can do to support them. Giving them the care they deserve is more than just a service—it’s a heartfelt thank you..”

Critical Need for Dental Care
- The need for access to dental care is crucial for the overall health of everyone. Not having access to dental care can lead to tooth decay, abscesses, and mouth infections. These can lead to or seriously complicate life-threatening diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and other chronic illnesses, and in a worst-case scenario, death from infections.
- We have an epidemic of oral health disease among the low-income Veterans throughout the State of Nevada.
- A disturbing 90% of the approximately 275,000 Veterans in Nevada do not qualify for dental care because the requirements are so restrictive.
- The Reno VA accounts for 98% of all Veteran referrals to AAVD.
- Dental care options are very limited for low-income Veterans in Nevada.
- In many cases, AAVD is the only viable option for low-income Veterans because there is no cost to them.
- Painful oral decay can lead to loss of teeth where the Veteran cannot eat or digest their food properly and receive the necessary nourishment to maintain their health. There is also the stigma of not being able to smile which often leads to isolation and the ability to function in a job or in social situations.
Key Program Successes
- Recognition of Need: The Adopt a Vet Dental Program (AAVD) has consistently been a top priority for the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS) in addressing the dental care needs of low-income Veterans in Nevada across multiple legislative sessions. For fiscal years 2024 and 2025, AAVD has been included in the Governor’s budget, a significant milestone. We are deeply grateful for the continued support from the State of Nevada and the Governor’s Office.
- Service Statistics: Since April 2010, AAVD has delivered full-mouth restoration and/or emergency dental care to over 1,828 low-income Veterans. This includes 274 Veterans from rural areas and 85 women Veterans, highlighting our focus on these underserved populations. In Fiscal Year 2024, AAVD delivered critical, life-saving dental care to 200 Veterans!
- Volunteer Contribution: AAVD benefits from the expertise of 152 volunteer dental professionals who have donated over $9.5 million in dental services. Our program achieves a return on investment where every $1 donated yields $8.80 in dental services.
- Fundraising Efforts: The 2nd Annual Golf Tournament, organized by AAVD and our dedicated volunteers, raised an impressive gross amount of over $48,000! We are incredibly humbled by the overwhelming support from local businesses and community members, and we are excited to use these funds to further our mission. Additionally, our Annual “For the Love of Cars & Vets” fundraiser—an evening of fun, drinks, and auctions held at the Car Condo every November—was a great success. Special thanks to our Board Member, Suzanne Edwards, for hosting and organizing this event, which raised over $15,000 in just one night!
- Statewide Outreach: We’re proud to announce that AAVD has visited every county in Nevada, successfully extending our services and providing life-saving dental care across the entire state. This achievement ensures that all communities, regardless of location, have access to the critical dental care they need.
- Expanded Partnerships: We have partnered with 25 new community dental care providers, enhancing our ability to offer care to a broader range of Veterans and reducing wait times for treatment.
